The Captain’s Log – sun-daughters, sea-daughters (Aimee Ogden) & remote control (Nnedi Okorafor) – two tor.com novellas

Captain's Quarters

Ahoy there me mateys!  Here be reviews of two tor.com novellas that I read recently (click on titles to add to yer Goodreads Ports for Plunder List):

sun-daughters, sea-daughters (Aimee Ogden)

This story was lovely and follows a person named Atuale who leaves her life in the sea to live on the land with her beloved.  A plague comes to her husband’s people and Atuale is determined to find a cure, even if it means having to ask the people she left behind for help and also potentially alienating those she hopes to save.

I enjoyed how this novella had the feel of a fairytale but with sci-fi elements instead.  I loved the mods, the gender shifting, the other worlds, and the world building.  I loved how the people could have been human-hybrids but also could have maybe been from somewhere else.  But above all I loved the…

Lindsey Stirling

By Hook Or By Book

Several years ago I stumbled across a young violinist, song writer, choreographer, and dancer on Spotify named Lindsey Stirling, and have been hooked ever since. She is a wonderful performer who has never ceased to amaze me with her mastery of the violin and fancy footwork. As part of her new on demand special Home For the Holidays, she performed her popular Crystallize WHILE HANGING BY HER HAIR! I was equally horrified and filled with admiration at what she accomplished. The first video below is her vlog which shows what she went through as she trained, and the second is the performance.

Answers from Trump Supporters

Nan's Notebook

Copied from a Facebook post:

THIS WAS ON A FRIEND’S PAGE: An anguished question from a Trump supporter: ‘Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?’

THE SERIOUS ANSWER: Here’s what the majority of anti-Trump voters honestly feel about Trump supporters en masse:

That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought “Fine.” (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2018/04/10/trump-university-settlement-judge-finalized/502387002/)
That when you saw a man who had made it his business practice to stiff his creditors, you said, “Okay.” (https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-hotel-paid-millions-in-fines-for-unpaid-work)
That when you heard him proudly brag about his own history of sexual abuse, you said, “No problem.” (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/list-trumps-accusers-allegations-sexual-misconduct/story?id=51956410)
That when he made up stories about seeing Muslim-Americans in the thousands cheering the destruction of the World Trade Center, you said, “Not an issue.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/11/22/donald-trumps-outrageous-claim-that-thousands-of-new-jersey-muslims-celebrated-the-911-attacks/)
That when you saw him brag that he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and you wouldn’t care, you…

I know when many of us hear the name “Trump,” it’s usually no laughing matter. However, there are some talented comedians who have successfully brought some much needed levity to this dark period of time, and one of them is Sarah Cooper, aka The Trump Whisperer. If you haven’t caught her hysterical impersonations and lip syncing, you’ve got to visit her on TikTok and YouTube. For now though, here are a few of my favorites.

Black Lives Matter

Kyera's Library

I felt like I needed to make a few things for my library to show our support before I could focus on my personal blog because it’s a more visible brand that probably influences more people in the community than I do – but I wanted to make sure I made a post for my blog as soon as I could. We can’t be silent. It’s important to educate ourselves and be understanding of other’s plights. If you want to learn more, go to: https://blacklivesmatter.com/ or https://www.naacpldf.org/ because both websites are full of resources, information, links, and will do a better job explaining things than I ever could.

I was inspired by some fantastic teen books that have come out since the beginning of this year and decided to post one recommendation per day for the rest of the month. I hope that these own voices novels will inspire you…
